Canva is one of the most popular design tools on the internet, and for good reason—it is incredibly user-friendly. However, when it comes to designing for physical apparel, a file that looks great on your Canva screen might print like a blurry, pixelated mess if it is not exported correctly.
Since DTF printing requires a high-resolution (300 DPI) PNG file with a transparent background, you have to use a specific export process.
Note: Exporting with a transparent background requires a Canva Pro account. If you are on the free version, your file will export with a solid white box behind it, which will print on your shirt.
Here is the step-by-step guide to exporting your Canva designs perfectly for RVA Transfers.
1. Start with the Right Canvas Size
Do not guess your sizing. Before you drop a single graphic onto the page, create a custom canvas matching the exact physical size you want the design to print.
-
Click Create a design in the top right corner.
-
Select Custom size at the bottom of the dropdown.
-
Change the measurement unit from px (pixels) to in (inches).
-
Enter your target dimensions (for example, 11 wide by 11 tall for a standard adult chest graphic).
2. Crop the Empty Space
Make sure your design fills the canvas as much as possible. If you have a 3-inch pocket logo sitting in the middle of an 11x11 inch canvas, the final exported file will mostly be empty space. This makes it incredibly difficult to size your artwork accurately later in our Gang Sheet Builder. Scale your artwork so it touches the edges of the canvas.
3. The Export Process
Once your masterpiece is finished, follow these exact settings to get your print-ready file:
-
Click the Share button in the top right corner of the screen.
-
Click Download from the dropdown menu.
-
File Type: Change this from the default to PNG. (Do not use JPG or PDF Print).
-
Transparent Background: Check this box. This is the most crucial step—it tells Canva to remove the white canvas behind your design so only your artwork prints.
-
Size Slider (Resolution): Canva natively exports PNGs at 96 DPI, which is too low for high-quality DTF printing. To hit the required 300 DPI, drag the Size slider to at least 3.125x. This scales up the resolution of your file without changing the physical inch dimensions, giving you crisp, perfect edges.
-
Click the purple Download button.
4. Final Review
Before uploading your new file to RVA Transfers, open the downloaded PNG on your computer and zoom in on the edges of your text and graphics. If it looks crisp and sharp, you are ready to go. If the edges look fuzzy or stair-stepped, you need to go back to Canva and slide that Size slider further to the right.
Also, check for soft drop shadows, glowing edges, or faded gradients that blend into the background. DTF printers lay down a solid white ink layer under all colors, so those semi-transparent effects often print with a harsh, unwanted white halo. Stick to hard edges and solid colors for the best results.
Once your high-res, transparent PNG is saved, head over to rvatransfers.com and drop it into our Gang Sheet Builder!
