How to Perfectly Peel Specialty DTF Transfers: Glow, Iridescent, Glitter, and Foil

How to Perfectly Peel Specialty DTF Transfers: Glow, Iridescent, Glitter, and Foil

RVA Transfers |

Specialty DTF transfers are an incredible way to add a highly sought-after, premium effect to your custom apparel. Whether you are using the bright night-time pop of Glow-in-the-Dark, the color-shifting magic of Iridescent, the sparkling finish of Glitter, or the high-end metallic shine of Foil, these specialty finishes always turn heads. However, working with these unique inks requires a slight adjustment to your standard pressing routine to ensure flawless results.

If you are used to ripping the film off immediately after pressing standard CMYK prints, you need to hit the brakes before handling your new specialty designs.

The Golden Rule: Specialty Transfers are Strictly COLD PEEL

The secret to a perfect application for Glow, Iridescent, Glitter, and Foil transfers comes down to temperature. You must wait until the transfer is completely cool to the touch before peeling.

Specialty inks have a different composition, containing unique metallic flakes, glitter particles, or phosphorescent materials that give them a slightly thicker viscosity compared to standard inks. Because of this, the adhesive and the ink layer need time to fully set and bond with the fabric fibers as they cool down. If you attempt to peel a specialty transfer while it is still warm or hot, you risk stretching the ink, pulling the design completely off the garment, or leaving a wrinkled, rough texture on that beautiful finish.

The Step-by-Step Pressing Process

To get a smooth, durable, and eye-catching finish across all your specialty prints, follow this specific pressing sequence:

  1. The First Press: Position your RVA Transfers specialty design on the garment. Press using heavy pressure at your standard DTF temperature (typically 300°F to 320°F) for 10 to 15 seconds.

  2. The Cool Down: Remove the garment from the heat press immediately. Do not touch the corner of the film. Lay the shirt completely flat on a cool table or a cooling rack. Allow it to rest until both the transfer film and the fabric underneath are 100% cold to the touch. Depending on your room temperature, this takes about 60 to 90 seconds.

  3. The Cold Peel: Once the shirt is cold, grab one corner of the clear carrier film. Do not pull straight up toward the ceiling. Instead, roll the film back low and tight against the garment in one smooth, continuous motion. The film should release effortlessly, leaving a perfectly smooth, flat graphic behind.

  4. The Second Press: Cover your freshly peeled design with a piece of parchment paper, butcher paper, or a Teflon sheet. Press it for another 5 to 10 seconds. This final press drives the specialty ink down into the fabric, sealing the edges and ensuring maximum washability.

Pro Tip for High-Volume Shops

If waiting 90 seconds per shirt is slowing down your production line, you can force the transfer to cool faster. Keep a dedicated, clean blackboard eraser, a thick piece of flat aluminum, or a cool microfiber rag near your press. Immediately after the first press, rub the cool item over the hot carrier film. It will absorb and dissipate the heat quickly, allowing you to execute your cold peel in half the time.

By treating your Glow, Iridescent, Glitter, and Foil transfers with a little bit of patience during the cold peel, you guarantee a soft, durable, and premium product that your customers will absolutely love.
